ROSA ROTES

gdy potrzebują wsparcia i rzetelnych informacji o stanie zdrowia swoim i płodu.

Szanuję każdy inny wybór i każde inne sumienie.

Uratowało mnie to przed niepotrzebnym przedłużaniem cierpienia,

niech wybierze sobie specjalizację, w której podobne dylematy go ominą!

Rosa Rotes,

Yes, I’ve had a legal abortion.

I dedicate the text to the girls who went through the abortion and to the boys who supported them.

I dedicate it also to all who helped me pass through one of the darkest valleys of my life so far,

without an additional psychological burden.

The vast majority of legal, artificially induced miscarriages in Poland are due to fetal damage,

or a woman’s health risk, not as a result of sexual offences.

According to divergent data of the ministry and of the National Health Fund,

there are only about 900 or 1800 permits issued yearly.

This is the reason, why the abortion underground flourishes.

According to some data, there are about 100 thousand of illegal abortions in Poland each year.

According to others, they number as much as 200 thousand.

Yes, I’ve had a legal abortion.

It’s taken two weeks of medical examinations before the procedure has been carried out.

I was given permission to terminate my pregnancy

because of the lethal defect of the foetus and the threat to my life, it constituted.

Yes, despite the great misery that I’ve had to endure, I was lucky.

I was lucky to meet an amazing team of doctors and nurses, women and men, who’d done everything they could,

to perform the intervention as quickly as possible and consequently, to reduce the suffering,

caused by carrying a defective and life-threatening foetus.

Yes, I know how many terrified women there are in my country, humiliated by the way they are treated,

when everything they need is support and reliable information about the health issues of the foetus and their own.

Yes, I realize, how humiliating for women is indoctrination and influencing their decisions.

Yes, I know how important it is to respect every choice.

Yes, me and my boyfriend have decided, crying and suffering, to terminate the pregnancy.

We have decided, consulting the medical professionals, that let the decision to us. Tough decision.

We would have never thought about it happening to us, before we did the tests.

Yes, even if I had survived and given birth, the baby would have lived the short hours of agony only to die.

This is incompatible with my conscience.

I do not consent to condemning anyone to suffering, especially someone so defenceless as a newborn man.

One torment is enough. No need for more suffering.

Yes, this is my approach and I respect every other choice and every other conscience.

Yes, I wish girls could decide whether they want to have the baby up to the twelfth week of pregnancy.

Not all of them are ready. No one can be forced to make personal decision, that changes all their life.

I want to have the right to decide about my body.

As long as the foetus can’t support its life without me, is within me, is me. When still expecting the child,

I understood, what is the best for me, unrealized as it turned out, baby.

Yes, I took the best decision for her and for me.

Anyone, who has never had a foetus in his womb and has never felt maternal feelings emerging,

has no right to speak in our name and impose their solutions on us.

Yes, I want all the pregnant girls to have access to prenatal screenings.

Very rarely their outcome is a decision about an abortion.

There are many more cases in which they save unborn children’s lives.

They help detect all the minor defects of the foetuses, enabling prenatal or newborn surgery.

Many high-risk pregnancies end happily due to those screenings.

Yes, I mourn the loss. I can’t sweep it under the rug.

It’s a mourning, the might-have-been mother experiences much more than the rest of the family.

Yes, the girls have the right to go through the trauma their own way.

The rites, associated with the burial of a born-alive do not fit to the burials of the foetuses.

Yes, there are plenty of miscarriages. They often bring great suffering.

Yes, I believe, we are short of words.

Foetus or an embryo is good for medical use.

It doesn’t fit into a personal situation, an intimate experience, everyone of us will sooner or later have.

The void, impossible to fill, emerges when there’s no name to give to the being.

Yes, I believe that it is necessary to find the right name for the stillborn foetus,

which after all is not a newborn or a baby.

To call it a baby is somehow natural, yet it’s not that.

Lack of an appropriate word makes us use the ones we have.

There is an inadequacy that is difficult to cope with.

Would „narodek” („something born”) be a good idea in Polish?

Yes, I’m very thankful, I haven’t heard about anybody’s conscience clause.

It saved me from suffering longer. I was not forced to look at it growing in me. I was not wondering that every day

there was bigger chance it was feeling pain.

Yes, I would like the society to treat miscarriages more seriously.

I don’t like the short leave from work to be called „maternity leave”.

What kind of maternity with no baby is it?

Yes, I felt humiliated by it.

Yes, this kind of leave should be called a „miscarriage leave”.

This way no one would complain, the girls use their situation to be absent from work.

When you lose a child, your body and mind need special approach.

Yes, we absolutely need to rest.

Yes, after the abortion or miscarriage, the state should grant all mothers a „miscarriage allowance”,

regardless of their approach to the matter, so that they can go to a psychologist,

go for the holidays, take care of themselves.

All in all, some of them will soon be pregnant again, hoping to give birth to a healthy baby.

This hope should be fostered.

Yes, it makes me furious, others try to decide what women should do with their bodies.

They don’t deal with the consciences of those who wage wars, killing born alive people, though.

Yes, I would really appreciate the conscience clause to apply to all military.

Some people can’t see things clearly.
